  • **IMPORTANT UPDATE**
After reinstalling the desktop app on my laptop, the drag and drop functionality works as expected. However, ordinary reinstalling didn't help on my desktop computer. I had to delete the content from the "App data/Roaming/remarkable/desktop" folder, uninstall, restart, reinstall, and now it works as it should!

So, the functionality works, it just somehow happened that I got two corrupt installation on both of my computers. However, the drag and drop functionality definitely works, once the app is cleanly reinstalled.

Here is a video about it, in case someone finds it useful 🙂

  • Thank you for this.
I've been trying to decide between Remarkable, Supernote, and Papyr. I know so many people love their Remarkable, and I want it primarily to write and convert to text. But the more I see about how Remarkable is handling everything right now (R2 launch, customer service, and now this upgrade for current users), I'm really rethinking it. This is really such lazy programming.
I'm actually leaning more to the Supernote, even though it doesn't really do OCR yet, because it's a better company with great customer service.

  • 21:25 I think this could be an incompatibility with your android keyboard's auto-correct / auto-text feature. Try adding a space at the end, or adding another last word and then deleting it.

  • 10:28 Yowsa, that's some lazy programming. All it would take is some simple metadata or even just a plain text or JSON/xml file describing where the files came from. Macs have been doing this properly since about 1985 (when HFS came out with proper folders).

  • How usable is the device without the desktop app? I only run Linux.

Thanks for all the great content. I will watch this video later today. I just finished your four-part review last night. 🙂

  • Thank you for your reviews.
I found an interesting inconsistency in Windows Desktop 2.3.0 – If you "export as PDF" a single document to the PC, it does not remember where you exported the last one and you have to navigate all over again (a lot of mousage). However, if you select several documents and 'export as PDF' AS A GROUP it remembers which folder you sent the last bunch of documents to.
This actually works better for the way I use rM – I take notes on it when meeting with clients, in court, etc. (I'm a lawyer). With this, I can select and export as a group to an intermediary folder on my desktop (or on my office server) then can open the PC folder and move the documents to the individual client folders. (Or have my staff do it.)

  • I would rather they create a similar app to Google's backup and sync, or Dropbox, desktop program, where you only need to use the native file explorer to browse the files on your remarkable

  • Its so funny. Almost every try out of a function reveals some flaws. Best examplified by the offset of the strokes or the "my new folder" phenomenon. What a joke this software is.

  • There is no internal storage ? really? how is that possible ? we cannot use their device unless we use their cloud storage , am I correct ? thanks in advance

  • Hello Deep Guide, thank you for your aweome review. Does it mean we cannot transfer files directly from computer to device, does it necessarily go through their cloud ? Are you not concerned about security and privacy issues? it means that every user content can easily be hacked. Thanks

  • For Mac users: the desktop app update only works for macOS 10.13 or later. It took them several days after I emailed them for them to put that note in the software update popup.
Unfortunately, my computer can't really handle a macOS update, so I guess I'm left out of any updates to the desktop app.

  • Cmd-A selects everything in current folder on MacOS. guess that would be Ctrl-A on Windows. Also, you can click on one file, shift-click on another, and all files between those two in the current sort order in the current folder are selected. Shift-arrow key selects multiple consecutive files/folders.

  • Very good testing video but it's quite frightening to see that for both version it's not a version 0 but an update which should be more mature than what is shown in your test. You're pointing out some very basic bugs or wrong UI behaviors which give me the feeling that Remarkable has thrown these update without too much testing… For the mobile app, I think Remarkable should hire a true mobile developer. I've preorder in March the Remarkable 2 (I'm in batch 4) and so I still need to wait to confirm I've made the good choice.

  • So, after watching you play with the new folder name on mobile I had to try it. On iOS, I could name a new folder all the combos you couldn't, including "New Folder." So, it's just an Android bug. Also, the copying/delayed moving of things seems to be a Android bug, because documents move proper on iOS.
Also, I'm so glad you keep making these videos. You take the guess work out of everything rM related and it's wonderful.

  • I'm going to wait out the RM2 review, as I've been waiting for several months already. But it starts to feel more and more like the Papyr has a more complete product after just launching, while remarkable still has some user interface issues after years in the market. They don't seem to listen that well to the community and the tablet itself lacks functionality that would actually improve paper. But the minimalistic vision and the lack of a proper feature road map makes it that we have no idea when – if at all – some much sought functionality will be implemented.

RM has to step up their game because they seem to have a decent competitor at last that offers a similar experience.

  • As older as I become, I understand SW development and creating stuff less. It can't be so hard for all companies nowadays to hear some customer thought's or even test there own s**t and think about it some seconds longer. This feelings are for nearly everything outthere atm.

  • Do you think it would be possible to increase the frame rate in LiveView? It looks a bit slow and not really pleasant to watch…

  • Why is there no Linux version? The apps are all built on Qt5, so should be a no brainer for rM to implement. Then the Mac version doesn't follow the standard File – Edit menu structure..

  • Can i import complete folders so that i dont have to import file by file ? I have several folders on my pc and need to import the folder structure in one move.

  • Desktop App query. The reMarkable should sync with desktop app directly, not via wi-fi, correct? I haven’t done this for ages, and am sure it worked before.

    Mac OS 10.13
    reMarkable wi-fi off
reMarkable connected via cable to Mac
    Added PDF to Desktop App
    No direct sync to reMarkable

  • Can a remarkable device interact with a chrome device? I currently (and blessedly) have no PC or Mac would I still be able to up-down load books and docs to the Remarkable? Thank you for your time!

  • An excellent review, well done. I find it astonishing that the android app clearly hasn't been adequately tested and it has schoolboy errors. Perhaps they decided it's best to release it like this in time for new RM2 users, rather than wait to get it right. Both should be possible of course, things like not being able to create a new directory with the name the user inputs are simple to program, and simple to test.

  • Does the desktop app only work from the rM cloud or can I send files to the rM via USB using this app? Or are there also changes for the connection via browser to rM (10.11.99.1)?

  • I thoroughly enjoyed your demo/review. I find bugs and idiosyncrasies in software through thought processes similar to yours. You will thus have saved me considerable time investigating these things during the course of using the updated software (though on Mac and iOS/iPadOS) which should take the "sting" out of their more egregious mistakes. What is most impressive is how you maintain a seamless, running commentary that is both natural and spontaneous with an even pace. Bravo, and thank you!
